The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) block is indicated for analgesia for surgery on the anterolateral thigh (e.g., skin grafting), muscle biopsy, and meralgia paresthetica.
Here are our 3 go-to tips to perform a Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Block
- Place the transducer in a transverse position just distal to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to identify the sartorius muscle.
- Identify the LFCN as a hyperechoic structure moving superficially to the muscle toward a tiny space between the sartorius and tensor fascia latae muscles.
- Insert the needle in-plane or out-of-plane deep to the fascia lata next to the nerve and inject 3-5 mL of local anesthetic.
