The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply affected the practice of medicine. Elective orthopedic surgery programs in many institutions have been eliminated, postponing needed surgeries and creating long waiting lists. Drs Hadzic, Jaffe and Henshaw present strategies for re-opening the elective surgical programs, based on the regional anesthesia service. Dr Hadzic discusses the strategies of using short-acting spinal anesthesia and hip blocks to transform hip replacement surgery to a day-case procedure and avoid hospitalization in a resource-drained environment. The panel also covers the best teaching strategies for training in regional anesthesia and organizing regional anesthesia and analgesia services.
