Nerve Blocks App: Costoclavicular Block

June 29, 2021

Costoclavicular block is becoming a go-to technique for upper extremity surgery when diaphragm function needs to be preserved and a complete brachial plexus block is needed. Go to the News Section for more info on the costoclavicular block.

The costoclavicular block is a safer alternative to the supraclavicular block for anesthesia of the entire brachial plexus. As the experience with this newer technique is being acquired, it is being used increasingly more often. Another advantage of this technique is that it blocks the entire plexus with one or two injections of local anesthetic, without the need to abduct the arm. The needle is advanced in-plane in a lateral-to-medial direction, between the three cords (ideally between the lateral and posterior cord).
