The “LCL – ITB – LCL – Biceps Femoris Dance” explained

April 21, 2023

Lateral knee pain can be caused by several things, but the most common cause is the iliotibial band syndrome, an overuse injury due to the iliotibial band moving across the outside of the knee joint.

The “LCL – ITB – LCL – Biceps Femoris Dance” maneuver allows you to combine the scanning techniques for each separate ligament of the lateral knee.

Here are the 4 different steps to perform this scanning maneuver

  1. Place the transducer over the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), bridging the popliteal notch on the femur and the fibular head.
  2. Pivot the distal end anteriorly towards Gerdy’s tubercle to visualize the iliotibial band (ITB).
  3. Return to the starting position over the LCL.
  4. Pivot the proximal end posteriorly to visualize the biceps femoris muscle and tendon.
