Point Of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop

Organiser: NYSORA

A highly practical, two-day immersion designed for clinicians who want to build real confidence in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). This workshop emphasizes extensive hands-on scanning, live demonstrations, and case-based discussions, allowing participants to translate ultrasound knowledge directly into clinical decision-making.
Through short focused lectures followed immediately by faculty-guided scanning sessions, participants will practice essential POCUS applications used in perioperative medicine, emergency care, and critical care.

Hands-On Ultrasound Training at the Core
The workshop is built around intensive hands-on scanning sessions. Each core topic begins with a concise lecture outlining clinical relevance, image acquisition, and interpretation, followed by demonstrations and supervised scanning on live models.
Participants will gain practical experience performing and interpreting:
Gastric ultrasound for aspiration risk assessment
FAST examination for trauma and acute care settings
Lung ultrasound for pneumothorax, consolidation, and fluid detection
Airway ultrasound for procedural guidance and airway evaluation
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) ultrasound assessment
Cardiac ultrasound using the FATE protocol and IVC assessment

  • Focused echocardiography during resuscitation using the FEEL protocol

Small-group scanning ensures participants receive direct feedback from expert faculty, maximizing learning and skill development.

Structured Learning with Immediate Practice
The curriculum is structured to reinforce learning through repetition and practical application. Each ultrasound module follows a learn–see–do approach:

  1. Focused lecture introducing clinical indications and image interpretation
  2. Live demonstration by expert faculty
  3. Hands-on scanning sessions with guided instruction

This format allows participants to quickly move from theory to practical skill acquisition.

Cardiovascular POCUS and Hemodynamic Assessment
The program includes dedicated training in focused cardiac ultrasound and hemodynamic evaluation.
Participants will practice:
Standard cardiac views using the FATE protocol
Inferior vena cava (IVC) assessment for volume status
Evaluation of global ventricular function
Estimation of ejection fraction (EF)

  • Measurement of TAPSE and MAPSE for right and left ventricular function

Hands-on practice reinforces the ability to obtain reliable images and integrate findings into clinical decision-making.

Case-Based Learning and Interactive Discussions
Beyond scanning skills, the workshop incorporates clinical case discussions and interactive Q&A sessions to deepen understanding of ultrasound interpretation and real-world application.
Participants will review cases involving:

  • Gastric aspiration risk assessment
  • Trauma and FAST exam interpretation
  • Lung ultrasound in respiratory pathology
  • DVT diagnosis
  • Cardiac POCUS findings in unstable patients

These discussions help translate ultrasound findings into practical bedside decisions.

Intensive, Practical Day-by-Day Structure
The workshop spans two full days of immersive learning.
Day 1 focuses on core ultrasound applications including gastric scanning, FAST exam, airway ultrasound, lung assessment, DVT evaluation, and cardiac imaging using the FATE and FEEL protocols. Each topic includes lectures followed by demonstrations and hands-on scanning sessions.

Day 2 emphasizes consolidation and advanced concepts, beginning with case review and interactive discussion, followed by extended hands-on scanning sessions and focused cardiac ultrasound training.

Designed for Practical Clinical Impact
This workshop is ideal for clinicians who want practical POCUS skills they can immediately apply at the bedside. The emphasis on repeated scanning, expert guidance, and real clinical scenarios ensures participants leave with greater confidence in performing and interpreting ultrasound in everyday practice.

Course Highlights

  • Extensive Hands-On Ultrasound Training
The workshop is built around practical skill development, with the majority of the program dedicated to hands-on scanning sessions. Participants practice core POCUS examinations on live models in small groups with expert faculty guidance, ensuring immediate feedback and skill refinement.
  • Core POCUS Applications for Daily Clinical Practice
Gain practical experience with the most clinically relevant ultrasound exams, including gastric ultrasound, FAST exam, lung ultrasound, airway assessment, DVT evaluation, and focused cardiac imaging.
  • Focused Cardiac Ultrasound and Hemodynamic Assessment
Develop the ability to obtain and interpret standard cardiac views using the FATE protocol, assess volume status with IVC imaging, and evaluate ventricular function using EF estimation, TAPSE, and MAPSE.
  • Learn–See–Practice Teaching Format
Each topic begins with a concise lecture, followed by live demonstration and immediate hands-on scanning, reinforcing knowledge and accelerating skill acquisition.
  • Interactive Case Discussions and Clinical Integration
Case-based sessions and interactive Q&A help participants integrate ultrasound findings into real-world clinical decision-making, improving diagnostic accuracy and bedside confidence.
