Prescriber's Guidelines - (con't)

These guidelines were developed for the use by Stony Brook University Hospital’s Acute Pain Service.

EPIDURAL PCA--HYPOTENSION
1. Check Vital Signs and Mental Status.
2. Check fluid status; consider bleeding!!
3. Check sensory level and motor exam to determine if catheter is intrathecal—if intrathecal CALL ATTENDING.
4. If not intrathecal and good analgesia is present
        A. Turn down basal rate.
        B. Consider holding infusion x 1 hour.
        C. Consider decreasing local anesthetic concentration.
        D. If B/P remains low, consider straight narcotic
            Hydromorphone PF 20 micrograms/cc to run at 7-10cc/hr
